Preview of Alibre Design 12 Release, New Features

December 2, 2009 By 3DCAD Editor Leave a Comment

Only days remain before the public release of Alibre Design 12 as of time of this article. Alibre 12 definitely continues the standing tradition of delivering powerful, easy-to-use features at low cost. Here is a list of some of them, grouped by their work space:

New commands and tools in Alibre Design:
Alibre Design will offer a 3D-text feature tool allowing text to be added as a parametric part feature. Individual features will support colour change for better identification, and the user will also be permitted to set the default 3D new part colour. Edit commands will include multiple clipboard paste in “rubber stamp” mode. Toolbars will be more customizable, and additional box select modes will speed up editing. Editable 3D section veiws, colour schemes and light sources are also supported now.

The Alibre Sketcher will display missing constraints as degree of freedom callouts (with configurable colourisation). It will also offer optional real-time dimensioning and placement while geometry is drawn, rather than requiring this be completed as an additional design step. This option saves users considerable time in constraint specification. Alibre Sketch will also offer quick bi-directional conversion between model sketch figures and reference geometry. Constraint and snap options for drawing have been added, as well as a new axis mirror option. 2D drawing space will support a new freeform table creation for relevant model data fields.

Alibre version 12 files will offer a convenient thumbnail view from both Windows Explorer and Alibre Vault PDM, which makes file selection easier.

Assembly:
The assembly space move and rotate commands have been merged into a single dialogue for faster model placement by the user. Assembly part arrays / patterns now offer placement preview. View performance for large assemblies has been greatly improved.

Alibre Sheet Metal Design:
Contour and lofted flange support is added. Now sheet metal designs can include tapered corners or profile flange with variable radius along its length. These “lofted flanges” are nicely flattened in Alibre (along with the rest of the part) for the initial pattern stamp or cut-out.

Alibre Design is the core CAD component of Alibre’s product offering, providing a complete parametric toolset for unlimited 3D part and assembly design and 2D drafting. Capable of creating complex mechanical designs with thousands of components, full assembly motion, automatic 2D drawing updates, and many other benefits, Alibre Design is similar to products such as SolidWorks, Inventor, and Pro/E. Tens of thousands of Alibre Design users in 50 countries and 15 languages use the software to design, verify, and virtually test their products.

With today’s announcement consumers have the option of spending $99 for Alibre Design or a minimum of around $5000 for competitors’ software. Paul Grayson, Chairman and CEO of Alibre, Inc., says, “Alibre has the unique ability to offer its professional engineering products at a fraction of the cost of the competition. But by lowering the price to $99, the offer is irrefutably the best in the history of 3D CAD. alibre Triple clamp screen shot.jpg

Alibre CAM is integrated into Alibre Design, the 3D parametric CAD product family from Alibre, so there is only one interface to learn and changes to the design automatically update tool paths. Alibre CAM products provide 2½ to 5-axis CNC milling, including profiling, pocketing, facing, v-carving, engraving and hole and thread milling, as well as a variety of roughing, re-roughing and finishing operations such as horizontal, parallel, and radial. Hole making operations are also supported, including drilling, tapping, boring and reverse boring, along with animated toolpath simulation. All Alibre CAM products come with numerous post-processors as well as a custom post-processor generator. Alibre CAM runs inside of the Alibre Design user interface and can be purchased as a bundle with Alibre Design, or as an add-on to a previously purchased version of Alibre Design.

Alibre CAM™ Makes CAD/CAM Accessible To Everyone

November 25, 2008 By 3DCAD Editor Leave a Comment

Richardson, TX — Alibre, Inc. today announced the Alibre CAM™ product family, the first fully integrated 3D parametric Personal CAD/CAM™ solution is accessible and affordable for manufacturers and machine shops of any size, even individuals. The Alibre CAM family of Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software products is integrated within Alibre’s popular Alibre Design™ 3D parametric CAD software.  Alibre CAM strengthens Alibre’s product offering to include an integrated CAM system at a fraction of the price of alternative products providing just CAD or CAM alone.

alibre cam.jpg

Alibre CAM products provide 2½ to 5-axis CNC milling fully integrated into the Alibre Design interface, with complete parametric solid modeling of parts and assemblies and automated creation of 2D drawings and Bills of Materials (BOM). All components of the integrated solution are associative to the solid model, meaning that an update to a model automatically updates other related components. So when a part model is edited, all assemblies that use that part will automatically update, all 2D drawings of that part will automatically update, and now with Alibre CAM, the toolpaths created for that part will also automatically update.

Building on the success of Alibre Design Xpress, the first and only free 3D parametric CAD application that has been downloaded over 500,000 times since its release in August 2005, the entry-level member of the Alibre CAM product family, Alibre CAM Xpress, will be offered free of charge to a select group of manufacturing professionals. This initial group will then be authorized to invite colleagues and partners to also get Alibre CAM Xpress at no charge. Unprecedented in the CAD/CAM industry, Alibre CAM Xpress is the first and only 3D parametric CAD/CAM system available for free. Details for obtaining Alibre CAM Xpress are available on the Alibre web site at www.alibre.com/products/mechanical/alibre_cam_xpress.asp.

Alibre and TraceParts to Provide Easy Access to Millions of 3D Models.

November 25, 2008 By 3DCAD Editor Leave a Comment

Richardson, TX – Alibre, Inc. and TraceParts, Inc. today announced immediate availability of a new TraceParts online portal providing the rapidly growing Alibre customer base direct access to the entire TraceParts parts library. The TraceParts library is one of the biggest parts libraries in the world, offering 100+ million 3D CAD models & 2D drawings, including both industry standard parts as well as products from hundreds of manufacturers.

TPO_Alibre.jpg

The TraceParts library is directly accessible from within the user interface of Alibre Design Professional and Expert, and 3D parts are available in the Alibre Design native format allowing them to be directly inserted into designs without translation. The library can also be accessed directly at www.tracepartsonline.net/ws/alibre, and couples powerful search capabilities, 3D dynamic previews and an easy to use interface that enables users to browse the large parts library to quickly locate and retrieve parts that can be directly inserted into a design.

According to Greg Milliken, CEO of Alibre, the new relationship helps design and manufacturing companies improve their overall design efficiency by leveraging standard off-the-shelf components freeing them to spend the majority of their time on their own design and manufacturing innovations.

“The massive TraceParts library delivers immediate value to our customers,” said Milliken. “It’s good practice to use off-the-shelf parts and products whenever possible because it reduces cost and decreases design time. The wider the selection the better, and the TraceParts library offers one of the widest selections on the market.”

“We are pleased to be working with Alibre,” said Bob Noftle, President of TraceParts, Inc. “Alibre’s growing popularity, great price/performance and simple user interface are expanding the market by attracting users who have not previously been able to afford or learn 3D. We believe this large and under-served market is an exciting marketing opportunity for all the parts vendors who selected TraceParts as their preferred partner to create and publish their CAD catalogs. These new users will get a lot of value from our 3D content, and Alibre’s position as the value leader provides us a unique opportunity to reach them.”
